McDonalds perspective in identifying their key publics in the Mclibel case. Its very important to correctly identify and characterize the relevant key publics. Dewy(1982) first propounded a public is a group whose members face a similar problem, recognize that problem exists, and organizes something to do about it. Grunig and Hunt(1984) assert that there are three stages in the evolutions of publics. In the first stage, the public does not recognize the problem. In latent stages, the public moves to the aware stage when it recognizes the problem. The final stage is the active stage recognizes the problem and organizes something to do about it. According to J.E. Grunig and Hunt (1984) the idea is to communicate with an aware public before it actively opposes an organization, thus becoming an activist public. London Greenpeace is an activist group with 3.3 million members in over 22 countries that use highly visible actions to draw media attention to environmental problems. The London Greenpeace group, a division of Greenpeace, is an independent group of activists that has no involvement in any political party. This group meets weekly to share concern for the oppression in our lives and the destruction of our environment. Anderson (1992) cited that weaknesses in most case studies of activism is that similar case studies should be conducted that examine activism from the perspective of both the organizations and of the activists groups, which is applicable to this study of the McLibel case. In my research, I came across must more literature and disseminated information from the small activist group of London Greenpeace versus the large multi-national corporation of McDonald's. This study also points to the need of more studies that examine the special problems of international communicatio n. The actions of a McDonald's triggered activist conflict not only in London, but in other different countries as well. If public relations practitioners are to assess issues successfully and identify publics that are likely to become active on those issues, they must look beyond the confines of their own culture and beyond the borders of their own country, Anderson (1992). Greenpeace, being an extreme organization, has to manage or maintain its public image as a group that will not compromise on environmental issues, Murphy and Dee (1992). The organization fits Grunig's (1989) description of a high involvement, information seeking public which believe in collective intervention in organizational decision making. This public seeks to change the direction of environmental decline versus a substitution for lost resources. Strategies of conflict used by Greenpeace, extreme actions, unilateral demands and its intolerance for compromisation. This model emphasizes winning at the expense of the other in which both Greenpeace and McDonald's exemplified through its actions. This method includes communication through manipulation of the issues to slant arguments in its own favor, the use of flamboyant symbols to depict choices in absolute terms, and the refusal to cede any points as pointed by Murphy and Dee (1992). Educating The Educators â€Å"For too long, our society has shrugged off bullying by labeling it a ‘rite of passage’ and by asking students to simply ‘get over it.’ Those attitudes need to change. Every day, students are bullied into silence and are afraid to speak up. Lets break this silence and end school bullying.† (Linda Sanchez) Bullying has been happening for an extremely long time, is there really a solution that can put an end to it? The answer is yes and we would do so by educating those around us, the community. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary definitions bullying as â€Å"abuse and mistreatment of someone vulnerable by someone stronger, more powerful, etc.† (webster) There are four main types of bullying which include verbal bullying done by: name calling, threatening and disrespectful comments, Physical bullying such as: hitting, kicking, pushing, Relational bullying which involves deliberately making someone feel left out by not letting them be involved in whatever you’re doing, and lastly cyber bullying which is done by spreading false information about someone else via: email, text and/or social media. Bullying has become such a huge problem that the National Institute of child health and human development did a study and found that â€Å"one in five children from grades 6 to 10 reported that they had traditionally bullied their classmates with 10% admitting they do it sometimes and 9% admitting to bullying at least once a week† (Cole et al., 2006). So why are so many kids bullying? Many kids find at this age it is crucial to fit in and believe by doing so is key, also helps ensure that they arent the victims of bullying. Another reason includes a childrens home situation. If things arent going well at home, or they themselves are victims of bullying by someone at home then they are more likely to do it to others, â€Å" it has been found with families that enforce rules which encourage aggressive behaviour† (Riclan, Klicperrova, Koucka, 1993). There are many long term and short term effects on bullying it was found that children who were victims of bullying have a higher risk for â€Å"common somatic problems such as colds, or psychosomatic problems such as or thinking about suicide.† (Wolke and Lereya) If a child is bullied in middle childhood by the age of 18-50 years old they are more likely to have anxiety or depression and attempts of suicide. It can physically affect someone to by â€Å"bodily pain, headaches and slower recovery from illnesses† (Wolke and Lereya) Being a victim of bullying can push someone to the edge so how do we end it and prevent it from happening again? I believe the main solution to this ongoing problem is to educate. Better educating teachers, parents and children on what happens to victims of bullying, the outcomes and giving them the proper tools to handle situations can really be the change we need. Back in 1983 the norwegian ministry of education came up with Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) the goal was to end bullying in schools with four principles which were to â€Å"have adults at school to show a positive interest and be involved in students lives, set firm limits, use non hostile negative consequences when rules are broken, function as authorities and positive role models.† (Olweus, 1993a, 2001a; Olweus et al., 2007). Teachers are the main focus and having them encourage good behavior and forming a trust with your students. Giving them a positive role model can start a change with how bullying is happening in school. Doing activities so that students can interact with each other and form bonds can actually lower bullying rates. This also creates a safe space for kids who get bullied outside of the classroom because their classmates can comfort them and give them a sense of community. Educating teachers on how to properly handle situations where a child i s potentially being bullied can play a huge part on ending bullying. Taking it further than inside the classroom and going district wide and having a code of conduct put into place by involving the community, children’s parents, etc. Being on the same page and setting a standard for children by enforcing the values of empathy, respect, and personal responsibility and setting clear consequences. Having school wide assemblies on bullying and bringing more awareness to the harm it can do to people will really open students eyes and make them think of if what they assume to be â€Å"just a joke† can do to another person. Doing this multiple times throughout a school year as well as a guest speaker or someone who can give a personal story involving bullying. Showing students a better way to handle their emotions rather than taking it out on other students by giving helpful, healthy and beneficial ways on resolving conflicts. This tool will help them in the long run not just with dealing with bullies but life skills that can help in work situa tions and so much more. Kids spend an average of eight hours in school so, how do we stop bullyings such as cyber bullying, which usually occurs when kids are at home. In this scenario parents/ guardians are key.   The first step for parents is being aware and knowing the warning signs that you’re kid is either being a bully, being bullied or witnessing it happening. This would be things such as sudden mood changes and behavioral changes. From the age you think it’s appropriate for your child to begin using technology, especially their own device,   Monitoring their online use by knowing exactly the reasons they are using the internet for. Children in adolescence often get carried away with technology, so limiting the use of it will overall help. Teaching your kids from the very beginning appropriate ways to use technology and the inappropriate uses can help them understand and give them guidelines to follow. By being open and communicating will allow a trust to be built and will make your child feel more comfortable coming to you if something is going on. A change needs to start, and we need to start with younger kids because they will continue to set examples for the new generations after them.We need informed and involved parents and teachers and the community to come together and end bullying. â€Å"But for bullying to stop completely, we need the kids who are growing up now to influence the generations to come. Knowledge, Confidence, and Deceit in Descartes and Shakespeare â€Å"Knowledge is power,† the English philosopher Francis Bacon once said1. It seems obvious then, that knowledge is something to be sought after, and of course it is sought after in everyday life, in thoughts, and in fiction. However, there is danger in this. Bacon’s quote no doubt refers to true knowledge, as power rarely comes from being misled. Yet, we are misled, deceived, and betrayed when in the pursuit of knowledge. A challenge then arises: how to continue in the pursuit of knowledge, something obviously necessary in life, while verifying that we are not being led astray. It seems a well thought out process for collecting knowledge is in order. Any pursuit of knowledge must begin with either an observation by the senses, or a piece of information supplied by a third party. This starting point must be verified, and then the process must move forward using a combination of Aristotelian logic, further observations and third-party information. Whenever observations or third-party knowledge is used, it must be verified carefully before proceeding. This process seems satisfactory, yet is much more complicated than it reveals on its skin. To further clarify the issue, some of the terms that have just been thrown around must be more specifically defined for their context. What is Aristotelian logic? This is simply the process of deducing truthful statements from other truthful statements. The main point here is that only a truth can imply a truth. Any findings based on a string of logic beginning with or including a false assumption cannot be trusted. This can lead to tricky situations in which the logic itself can be perfect and yet still yield a false result. What does it mean to verify something? This is where things get difficult. Since it is very hard to know if we actually know anything, we can never verify something completely. This concept is well out of the scope of this paper, but it is important to understand that complete verification is impossible, and endlessly inefficient, so we must be satisfied with a c ertain amount of verification. This wildly subjective statement poses a great problem. What is a good amount of verification? There is no answer to this question, because in fact, it differs for every situation, and even within a single situation, two people may apply different levels of verification.

Thus, they ceased work on the idea for a period of almost five years (Miller, 2006). After five years the creative team reunited to work on other projects and decided to revisit East Side Story and give it a completely new twist and decided to set it in Harlem, New York City (Miller, 2006). West Side Story depicts the love between a Caucasian teenage boy from the West Side of New York City and a young Puerto Rican girl from the same neighborhood. The characters were all from a poor neighborhood and hung out on the streets together. There were two gangs that were in constant conflict with each other: The Jets and The Sharks. Tony, the main character, is a member of the Jets, a gang composed of Caucasian teenage boys. He is however, different from the rest of the members and wants to work and someday go on his own way. Maria is the sister of the leader of the Sharks, a gang composed of teenage Puerto Rican boys. Maria and Tony meet and instantly fall in love and have to deal with the turmoil of being from different cultural backgrounds and the difficulty of having their love accepted by each of their groups. The relationship causes conflict in the neighborhood that results in violence and ultimately Tony’s death. West Side Story was considered a breakthrough for the Puerto Rican community. Very little exposure about the Puerto Rican culture and their presence in New York City had been portrayed in any type of media up to the time the play’s debut on Broadway. Although Puerto Rican’s were depicted with stereotypes that were not necessarily true about their culture, the story delivers a message of change. It describes racism as dangerous and as an obstacle to love. To have developed such a controversial story during times when segregation still existed in the United States was very brave. What softened the diversified and strong topic was the fact that it was a musical with very vivid choreography and colors andan upbeat script full of humor. This factor made the story more acceptable to the American people. The media has its ways to persuade the masses. Within the past century, the media has played an important part in the cultural changes in America. Television, radio, theater and written works have broken through the racism barriers to expose the many faces of the American population. Everyone is different and their cultural background makes a special contribution to the community of the world. West Side Story is a good example of a media piece that addressed America’s cultural diversity in a time when most people had no idea how multicultural our country really was. References Miller, G. The story To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the story expressed the character Scout in her story throughout Alabama where racial profiling shapes society. Atticus, her father, is the man who stands up for these rights in a jury case again an African American named Tom Robinson. Found guilty, because of his race not being what is socially acceptable as capable of being innocent. Prejudice, and the act of negative judgement, leads to discrimination of those judged and the unrightful treatment of them. However in this section Aunt Alexandra and Scout are stereotyped as people who are against and view African Americans as different from common human, which is a judgment of race.
